Message From Master Jung

Not Always Blue Skies

Look at yourself. Why are you smiling? Do you know what makes you smile and are you smiling for the right reasons? Are you smiling because you are rich, have lots of nice things, power, position and status? Those are all not real reasons to smile. They will not make you happy. You can only find true happiness with people—not with things. Things do not make you happy.

It is nice to have nice things. But it should not be what makes you happy. You should search for your happiness within yourself and the people around you. You should surround yourself with good friends, good family and you should choose them not because of what they have or where they are in life, but because they make you happy.

I will tell you a story. When I came to this country, I opened my first school in poor district of Cedar Rapids. It was a rough neighborhood. One young man in particular gave me lots of trouble. His mom was an alcoholic and his dad was in prison. He spent all his spare time picking on me, shooting out my windows with his BB gun. He was a thorn in my side for sure.

But I did not hold it against him. Soon, I took this young man under my wing and taught him TKD. He cleaned up his act and has become one of my most honored black belts. I did not care that he was poor, that he was costing me money. I cared only that I could take this young man, show him the respect and compassion of an instructor, and teach him to live a happier life. His growth as a person and as a student makes me smile even to this day.

Life is not always blue skies. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it snows. You have to adapt. Make your own happiness with the people around you and you make your own blue skies every day.
